Awards Category  : :  Large Project (over 25,000 sf)

A new corporate headquarters for the family-owned and operated Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete Company. The design for the corporate headquarters anchors a new 800-acre mixed-use development at the gateway to their hometown of Smyrna. The vertical layering of the five-stories mimics the rhythms found in the adjacent stone quarry used by the concrete company.

Smyrna Ready Mix is a family-owned and operated ready-mix company founded in Smyrna, Tennessee. The company started with three trucks in 1999 and today has over 5,400 employees in 16 states. The design for the corporate headquarters anchors a new 800-acre mixed-use development at the gateway to their hometown of Smyrna. The vertical layering of the five-stories mimics the rhythms found in the adjacent stone quarry used by the concrete company. Full glazing was desired to take advantage of the 800-acre vista as well as showcase the structural components. The building’s slender exposed concrete columns and curving shapes showcase the concrete material on which the company has been built. In addition, the cantilevered post-tension slabs show the strength and sculptural possibilities of concrete. Boasting unprecedented corporate amenities for the on-site staff as well as their drivers, the first floor includes on-site dining, a fitness facility, training and community rooms as well as a daycare for 100 of the company and community’s children.
