The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery at HCA Florida West Tampa Hospital is a first-of-its-kind facility dedicated to the surgical care and treatment of the endocrine glands. The 65,000 square foot project is designed to prioritize the patient experience, and provides state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care in one convenient location.

The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery opened in January 2022, a first-of-its-kind facility dedicated to the surgical care and treatment for endocrine tumors and disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.

Our client recognized the desire for a dedicated Endocrine Hospital, as they knew it would elevate patient care. Partnering with a world-renowned surgeon, recognized for his expertise on thyroid disease and the development of a minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, they sought to provide a new home for this specialized practice.

HCA owned a partially unoccupied hospital in Tampa, Florida with the square footage needed to accommodate this practice. The hospital was built in the late 1970s and underwent several additions through the 1990s, leaving the spaces dated and not reflective of state-of-the-art facility that the group needed. The design team was tasked with implementing a design that radiates confidence, promotes comfort, and supports the forward-thinking patient care provided by the Endocrine Surgery Group’s practice. Because patients travel from across the world, our team envisioned an experience that would speak to the level of patient care provided and feel like a Florida destination.

With a challenging existing facade, the design team amplified the entrance to the facility by removing the existing layers of a series of entrance canopies, vestibules and exterior materials. Wood-look metal panels, perforated metal screens and large expanses of windows were used to lighten the façade from it’s original heavy state. A glass canopy welcomes visitors into the lobby where the design is centered around West Florida’s most notable features – the sun, sand, tropical environment, and blue skies. This served as the inspiration for the color palette, materiality, and texture implemented in the interior and exterior design.

The client insisted on maximizing natural light into interior spaces, as well as incorporating outdoor gardens to look out upon and provide areas of patient and visitor respite. The design team took advantage of the existing site, adding in vibrant native species and lush shading trees to create views from the lobby spaces and providing new outdoor destinations, including a new Dining Terrace with glass and steel trellis above.

The design of the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery reflects the sophisticated and high-tech care patients can expect to receive.
