The new Brentwood Police Headquarters allowed the Brentwood Police force to expand and improve its facilities and services. The new location is also more centrally located within its service area to better serve its community.

The new Brentwood Public Safety Headquarters is located centrally within the community and along major roadways making the provision of public safety services more efficient and effective. The consolidation of police activities into a single building improves distinction of public safety activities from the City Hall functions and provides both positive visibility within the community and autonomy of purpose. A collaborative interior layout and site planning takes advantage of the natural slope of the site to split public-facing departments from internal activities on separate levels. On-grade entrances are provided to both levels from the public parking at the front lower entrance and from the secure parking area for officers and staff on the upper level. This separation allowed for greater safety – a critical success goal of the Client. Sensitive site planning also maintains the existing pond and green spaces being a good neighbor to the adjacent retirement community.

Public spaces including a courtroom, community room, records and rooms for receiving citizen reports are on the first floor off of the main lobby. The new training facilities including an indoor firing range and digital simulation room are on the more public lower level in anticipation that they will be utilized by outside agencies as well as their own force. This also allows training to occur with less interruption with the day-to-day police activities which largely occurs on the second level. A ‘hub’ established by the break areas on both floors is connected by an open stair and serves as the ‘heart’ of the building. Officers and staff gather and cross paths throughout the day as they move between departments and floors. Other support functions including the daily briefing room, staff locker rooms, fitness areas, staff mailboxes and digital bulletin boards promote these interactions. These co-located communal functions streamlines their daily process, encourages cohesion as an internal community and promotes the camaraderie that makes them affective in their service to the Brentwood community.

The building is a workplace and community asset. The criminal investigation services including interviews, evidence handling, and evidence testing are augmented by the new labs, technology, evidence holding and analysis areas for more accurate case management. Also included is a new 911 dispatch center and suspect holding areas serving separate but critical elements of the public safety effort. Public safety is greatly enhanced by the architecture, interior environment and the capacities provided by this project.
